  • The City of Cincinnati allows residents to keep chickens in their backyards.
  • Number of chickens: A resident can keep the maximum number of chickens in their backyard is 24. However, the number of chickens allowed depends on the size of the lot.
    • The maximum number of chickens for lots less than 10,000 square feet is 6.
    • For lots that are 10,000 to 20,000 square feet, the maximum number of chickens is 12.
    • For lots that exceed 20,000 square feet, the maximum number of chickens is 24.
  • Roosters: Only one rooster is allowed per every 15 hens per lot. Please ensure compliance with this requirement.
  • Setback: Each chicken structure must be 10 feet from all property lines. This ensures adequate space and distance from neighboring properties.
  • Restraint: Chickens must be kept in a secure coop or run that prevents them from running at large. Ensure that your chickens are safely contained within their designated area.
  • Cleanliness: Keeping the coop or run clean and free of odors is important. Regular maintenance and cleaning are necessary to maintain a healthy environment for your chickens and to prevent unpleasant odors.
  • Nuisance: Chickens must not be kept in a way that creates a nuisance, foul odor or poses a health risk to occupants or neighboring individuals.
