  • Number of Chickens: Residents of the City of Nashua can keep up to 6 adult chickens on their property.
  • Roosters Prohibited: Only female chickens are allowed. Male chickens are prohibited.
  • Chickens must be secured in the coop during non-daylight hours and cannot roam free.
  • Coop Requirements 
    • The coop must be located in the side or rear yard and cannot be located within 20 feet of a property line. 
    • The coop must provide adequate ventilation, be kept in a neat and sanitary condition, and be maintained in a manner that will not disturb neighboring lots due to noise, odor, or other adverse impacts.
    • If a run is provided, the coop must have a minimum of 3 square feet of floor space per chicken. 
    • If no run is provided, the coop must have a minimum of 10 square feet of floor space per chicken. Each chicken must have a total available ground space (including coop and run, if any) of at least 10 square feet per chicken.
    • The maximum height for a coop is 8 feet, measured from the ground to the top of the structure.
    • The materials used in building the coop must be uniform for each structure element.
  • Commercial Use: Chickens cannot be used for commercial purposes. No person may sell eggs, engage in chicken breeding, or any other commercial activity related to keeping chickens.
