If you’re excited about raising chickens in Grand Island, you must familiarize yourself with the rules and regulations that pertain to it.

  • Chickens Allowed: Yes, chickens are allowed in Grand Island, Nebraska. 
  • Number of Chickens: Residents can keep up to 4 chickens per acre, with a minimum of one acre. So, for example, if you have two acres of land, you could keep up to 8 chickens.
  • Roosters: Roosters are not allowed in Grand Island, Nebraska. The only exception is for commercial retail establishments that offer live fowl or chickens for retail sale, and governmental and/or non-profit educational facilities.
  • Chicken Enclosure: All chicken enclosures must be at least 15 feet from any privately-owned property abutting the owner’s property.
  • The limit in Number: No residential property can have more than 30 birds over six months of age at any one time.
  • Other Rules: In addition to the above restrictions, there are a few other rules that must be followed when keeping chickens in Grand Island, Nebraska. These include:
    • Chickens must be kept in a secure coop that prevents them from escaping.
    • Chickens must be provided with fresh water and food daily.
    • Chicken manure must be disposed of properly.
