The City of Tupelo has established the following rules and regulations for backyard chicken keeping.

  • Chickens permitted. In Tupelo, Mississippi, residents are allowed to keep chickens in their backyard if they can meet the space requirements.
  • Rooster restrictions. Residents are not permitted to keep roosters in their backyard.
  • Area. Chickens must be kept in an open area of at least one (1) acre, with no part of the area lying within two hundred fifty (250) feet of any residence
  • Coop guidelines. Chickens must be kept penned in such a manner as to restrict the movement of such chicken completely to the penned area. No such penned area shall exceed two hundred (200) square feet in size nor violate health regulations.
  • Cleanliness. Chickens must be kept in a clean and sanitary coop.
  • No Free Roaming. Residents are not allowed to let their chickens roam free.
