  • Chickens permitted. In Idaho Falls, Idaho, residents are allowed to keep a maximum of six (6) chickens in their backyard if their lot is more than 5,000 square feet. For each additional 1,250 square feet, you can keep an additional chicken up to a total of 12 birds.
  • No roosters allowed. To minimize noise disturbances, roosters are not permitted within city limits.
  • Obtaining a permit. A permit is necessary for keeping backyard chickens, and residents must complete an application and pay any applicable fees.
  • Coop and run specifications. Chicken coops should be well-ventilated, secure against predators, and designed for easy cleaning. Each chicken must have at least 3 square feet of space within the coop and a minimum of 10 square feet of space in the run.
  • Coop positioning and setbacks. Coops need to be placed a minimum of 25 feet from any neighboring residential dwelling and at least 3 feet away from property lines.
  • Sanitation and upkeep. Maintaining clean and sanitary conditions in chicken coops and runs is essential, with proper waste disposal and regular cleaning required.
  • Slaughter limitations. The slaughtering of chickens is not allowed on residential properties within the city limits.
  • Homeowners’ Association (HOA) guidelines. Residents should consult their HOA to confirm whether backyard chickens are permitted under their community’s specific rules. HOA regulations may override city rules in certain cases.
