If you’re considering the joys of raising chickens in Harrisburg, there’s a whole realm of information beyond the standard rules and regulations.

  • The City of Harrisburg recognizes and permits residents to keep chickens in their backyards. 
  • Roosters: Roosters are not allowed within the City of Harrisburg for backyard chicken keeping. 
  • Lot size: Chickens are only allowed on at least 40,000 square feet in size.
  • Number of chickens: A maximum of 10 chickens are allowed per 40,000 square feet of lot space.
  • Coop placement: The chicken coop must be set no closer than 75 feet to the front lot line and no closer than 75 feet to any side or rear lot line.
  • Odor control: The owner or person(s) responsible for the care and keeping of chickens shall be responsible for preventing or eliminating all odors, animal waste, and insect infestations caused by the maintenance of such animals.
