  • The city of Las Cruces, New Mexico, allows residents to keep chickens and ducks on their property.
  • A special permit is required for any property not zoned for livestock keeping.
  • The number of chickens or ducks allowed depends on the size of the property.
  • The total number of chickens and/or ducks cannot exceed six for properties less than one-half an acre that are not specifically zoned for livestock.
  • For properties greater than one-half an acre, the number of chickens is limited to one per 2,000 square feet, up to a maximum of 100.
  • Roosters are not permitted on properties not zoned for the keeping of livestock.
  • Maintenance of Chicken Pens. Chicken pens must be continuously maintained with preservatives, fasteners, and other materials to prevent deterioration and animal escape.
  • The chicken enclosure must also be maintained in a clean and sanitary condition.
