Planning on raising chickens in Sparks? Make sure you educate yourself about the rules and regulations that apply.

  • The City of Sparks recognizes and permits residents to keep chickens in their backyards. 
  • Roosters are strictly prohibited within the city limits due to their noise. 
  • Number of Chickens:
    • Parcels between 0 and 2,000 square feet may keep up to 2 hens.
    • Parcels between 2,001 and 6,000 square feet may keep up to 4 hens.
    • Parcels between 6,001 and 10,000 square feet may keep up to 5 hens.
    • Parcels greater than 10,000 square feet may keep up to 2 hens for every 2,000 square feet of parcel size, not to exceed 16 hens.
  • Other Restrictions:
    • Chickens must be restricted from accessing the front yard.
    • Slaughtering chickens on site is prohibited.
    • The site must be free of dead chickens and excessive hen droppings.
    • Chickens must be provided a covered enclosure (coop) and must be kept in the covered enclosure at night. The enclosure must allow at least 10 square feet per hen.
    • The coop must be a minimum of 5 feet from any property line, remain within the rear yard, and maintain a 10-foot setback from the main structure.
    • The coop must be clean and odor-free.
