Considering the idea of having your own chickens in Carson? Equip yourself with the knowledge of the rules and regulations that you must adhere to.

  • Residents of Carson City are allowed to keep chickens.
  • Male chickens or roosters are not allowed in the city.
  • On residentially zoned properties requiring less than one (1) acre in land area, a maximum of (4) female chickens may be kept.
  • For one acre, 6 animal units are allowed. Five chickens are allowed per animal unit. For lands exceeding one acre in size and zoned single-family two-acre (SF2A) or single-family five-acre (SF5A), only two animal units may be added per additional acre up to five (5) acres.
  • If you want to keep more chickens than allowed, according to the guidelines above, you need to obtain a permit from the Animal Services Department.
  • The coop must be kept clean and free of pests.
  • Chickens must be provided with access to fresh water and food at all times.
  • Chickens must be kept under control and not allowed to roam freely.
