To successfully raise chickens in Rockville, it’s crucial to familiarize yourself with the rules and regulations governing this activity.

  • Rockville, Maryland allows residents to keep up to five (5) female chickens on their property with a permit. 
  • Roosters are not permitted. 
  • To keep chickens, residents must obtain a permit by completing an application form, providing proof of residency, and paying a permit fee.
  • Chickens shall not be permitted at multi-family dwelling units or townhouses.

Regulations

  • Chickens must be kept at least five (5) feet from the property line and at least forty (40) feet from the primary residential structure on each adjacent lot.
  • Slaughtering of chickens is not allowed on residential properties.
  • Chickens younger than eight (8) weeks of age must not be imported into the city.
  • Residents granted a permit to keep chickens must provide written notice to all abutting neighbours prior to bringing the chickens onto their property.
