Planning to keep chickens in Frederick? Take the time to learn about the rules and regulations that govern this activity.

  • Number of chickens: The maximum number of chickens allowed is six (6).
  • Lot size: The property must have a minimum lot size of 2,500 square feet.
  • Type of chickens: Only female chickens (hens) are allowed. 
  • Roosters are strictly prohibited in Frederick.
  • Coop and run: Chickens must be kept in a coop and run that meets certain requirements.
    • The coop must be at least four (4) and at most ten (10) square feet per chicken. 
    • The coop must be located in the backyard and at least ten (10) feet from any lot line.
  • Waste disposal: Chicken manure must be composted or disposed of properly.
  • License: A license is required to keep chickens in Frederick. A person applying for it must be 18 years old or more.

To obtain a chicken license, residents must also meet the following criteria:

  • Own a single-family home or duplex.
  • Provide a schematic drawing of the property showing the location of the coop and run.
  • Pay the license fee.
