Dreaming of raising chickens in Barre? Here are the basic rules for keeping chickens in the city.

  • Maximum Number of Poultry: Residents can keep chickens, with a maximum limit of 15 poultry per household.
  • Secure and Sanitary Coops: Chickens must be kept within secure and sanitary coops to ensure their well-being and prevent potential issues with neighbors.
  • Space Requirements: Residents must provide 3 square feet of space per chicken within the coop, with a maximum total coop size of 45 square feet. Additionally, each bird must have 4 square feet of fenced outdoor area.
  • Female Chickens Only: Only female chickens are allowed to be kept in backyards. Roosters are not permitted.
  • Notification to Adjoining Property Owners: Before establishing a backyard chicken coop, adjoining property owners must be notified. They also maintain the right to appeal to the animal control committee if necessary.
  • Coop Location: The coop must be located at least 10 feet away from any property line and at least 30 feet away from any building used for residential purposes by anyone other than the person maintaining the animal yard.
