Have you ever considered the joy of raising chickens in Livonia? To embark on this endeavour successfully, it’s imperative that you familiarize yourself with the essential rules and regulations. 

  • Livonia City Residents are allowed to keep chickens and rabbits on properties that are one-half acre or larger for their personal consumption.
  • No roosters are allowed in Livonia City. 
  • If you have a parcel of land that is five (5) acres or larger, you may raise chickens and rabbits for sale.
  • Slaughtering Restrictions: The slaughtering of animals or fowl is strictly prohibited in Livonia unless you obtain a license from the City Clerk. 
  • Restrictions on Live Fowl: It is important to note that live fowl, such as canaries, parrots, and parakeets, are not permitted in any room where food or drink is prepared, stored, or served. 
  • Chicken Coop Requirements: The chicken coop must meet specific requirements to ensure the safety and well-being of the chickens as well as the surrounding community. The following guidelines apply:
    • The coop must have a secure floor attached to all sides of the enclosure or embedded in the ground at a minimum depth of two (2) feet.
    • Measures must be in place to prevent young children from entering the enclosure, ensuring their safety around the chickens.
    • The coop must be constructed and consistently maintained in a manner that effectively prevents the chickens from escaping the enclosure.
